Günther Theuring (1930-2016), founder of EMIV’s predecessor Wiener Meisterkurse, offered these words about the point of master classes in his unique way:
“Look, someone sits down and plays like a tiger, and it sounds like he’s a puppet. Every sound is there but stands in space without a relationship to anything. Well, he got that from a teacher who said: Grab into the keys! But that there are hundreds of possibilities of piano, that’s the beauty of it, and to follow that from the scores, and to really learn a part from the score, that’s one of the necessities that you actually have to hear from great artists.”
