Félix Dervaux is professor for horn at MuK Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna.
He began his musical career at the CNSMD in Lyon, France, at the UdK Berlin, and at the Karajan Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic, during which he became principal horn at the Lyon Opera (France) and also won the first prize at the Porcia International Competition in Italy.
His dedication and passion for his craft were recognized when he was entrusted with the position of principal horn with the prestigious Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. A few years later, he was offered the opportunity to join the Cleveland Orchestra as principal horn as well, but after careful consideration and becoming a prize winner at the ARD International Competition in Munich, Dervaux decided to pursue a solo career.
This transition led him to perform as principal horn or occasional soloist with some of the world's most renowned orchestras, including, for example, the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Mariinsky Orchestra.
In 2018, he achieved a unique honor: he was one of the inaugural brass recipients of the International Tchaikovsky Competition’s prize, which, that year, opened its doors to wind instruments. Following this, Dervaux ventured into composition, creating a double concerto for horn and bassoon, a bassoon concerto—respectively premiered in France and Japan—and is now engrossed in his debut horn concerto.
Dervaux’s rich career also includes noteworthy recordings—serving as principal horn with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic. One standout includes a CD recording of Oliver Knussen’s Horn Concerto with the Concertgebouw.
