Symposium, Lecture & Concert: 80 Years “Anschluss” 1938: Egon Wellesz
Date: 11 July 2018
Location: Laudon Palace, Vienna
The day of the “Anschluss” also marked the beginning of Egon Wellesz’ exile: he was in Amsterdam together with Bruno Walter, who first performed Wellesz’ “Prosperos Beschwörungen” in The Netherlands with the Concertgebouw Orchestra. Shortly after, Wellesz found exile in Oxford, where he got an ad-personam chair at Lincoln College. However, the relatively comfortable situation there could not hide the fact that he was now, like so many other composers of his generation, uprooted.
This rupture in his biography will be highlighted at our symposium on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the “Anschluss” and the beginning of his exile.
The symposium will be concluded by a concert with Lieder and chamber music by Egon Wellesz, both form his works before and after 1938.
